Sirsasana (Headstand) and Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) are often called the King and Queen of the Asana. They are beautiful and transformative postures that build strength and flexibility in the musculoskeletal body, have myriad benefits to the nervous and circulatory systems, and cultivate eka grata, the single-pointed focus that prepares the mind for meditation. And yet with great power, comes great responsibility. Practicing and teaching Headstand and Shoulderstand require thoughtful preparation, precise alignment and knowledgeable sequencing of postures.
In this two-part course we’ll examine how effective sequencing of postures and instructions can help students develop a relationship with these poses, as well as work with the variations and modifications that are appropriate for their body and level of experience.
In our first session, we will explore effective sequencing principles for Sirsasana. You’ll be taken through specific sequences with different emphases, each of which build progressively and mindfully to Headstand. In addition, we’ll discuss the ongoing work that can be done over time to build the strength and alignment awareness necessary to support a healthy Headstand practice.
In the second session, we will explore Sarvangasana in the same way. We’ll cover both specific sequences to practice and teach, as well as the ancillary daily work that will help build the body strength and flexibility over time to reinforce the work in class.
As part of the course package you will receive a video with demonstrations and instructions on how to set up both Sirsasana and Sarvangasana, including the use of props.

- Recordings of Both Sessions: Yours to keep. It’s generally acknowledged that many people only retain 10-20 percent of what they learn in a workshop. You will get the recordings of both sessions (MP3 & MP4), enabling you to go back and listen to the workshop as many times as you like.
- Transcripts of Both Sessions: Ever wanted to refer to a certain part of a course? Even the best note takers miss a point every so often. With the transcripts of the sessions, you can go back and refer to particularly important passages or clarify sections you were in doubt about.
