Yoga as Lifestyle Medicine: Reaping the Benefits of the Yamas and Niyamas

TEACHER ED
Jan 26 & 27

Most yoga students think of yoga as the physical postures of asanas or the breathing practices of pranayama.

However, in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra we are introduced to the Yamas and Niyamas, the ethical guidelines for all practitioners. In other words, the classical teachings of yoga begin not with asana, but rather with the guidelines for how we can become our best selves and live in the world in a way that reduces stress and suffering for ourselves and others.

This rationale makes a lot of sense – if we practice yoga regularly, but have a lifestyle that invites stress and suffering into our lives, the physical practice of yoga is less likely to bring us the benefits we want.

The practices of yoga are meant to touch the whole fabric of our lives, not just our physical health. In this course, Judith Hanson Lasater offers an introduction to the Yamas and Niyamas and shows how they have practice relevance in modern-day as a practical approach to lifestyle medicine based on the ancient yoga teachings.

This Course Also Includes:

  • Recordings of All Webinar Sessions: It’s generally acknowledged that many people only retain 10-20 percent of what they learn in a workshop. You will get access to the recordings of all webinar sessions – both MP3 (downloadable) and MP4 (streaming online), enabling you to go back and listen to the workshop as many times as you like.

  • Yoga Practice Videos: Enjoy two yoga practice videos with Judith and her daughter Lizzie.

  • Transcripts of All Sessions: Ever wanted to refer to a certain part of a course? Even the best note-takers miss a point every so often. With the transcripts of the webinar sessions, you can go back and refer to particularly important passages or clarify sections you were in doubt about.

This course qualifies for 4 non-contact hour CEs with Yoga Alliance.

The practice of yoga is fundamentally an act of kindness toward oneself. This idea is often forgotten, but not by Judith, whose approach is warm, non-judgmental and responsive to individual differences and needs.

I wanted to expand on my thank you. Yoga U Online has been an absolute lifesaver for me. I moved from a yoga mecca to a yoga desert. Instead of having my choice of teachers and styles and special workshops, I now have to travel an hour to take a class. The excellent teachers and interesting topics at Yoga U Online have kept me moving ahead in my practice. I am grateful for all the wonderful yoga you bring to me. Thank you.
