Yoga for Metabolic Syndrome – An Interview with Dr. Baxter Bell

Heart disease, stroke and diabetes all rank among the top 7 leading causes of death in the U.S. Can yoga help reduce the risk of contracting these all-too-common chronic diseases?

In this interview, Dr. Baxter Bell discusses one of the leading precursors of these three killers: Metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of physiological changes, which predispose us not just for developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but indirectly might also increase the risk of other chronic diseases, including cancer and dementia.

An estimated half of Americans may have metabolic syndrome, but according to doctors, an estimated nine out of ten people with metabolic syndrome go undiagnosed.

What is metabolic syndrome? And can you determine if you might have it? And, most importantly, can it be reversed and can yoga help play a role in preventing the clusters of symptoms that make up metabolic syndrome?

Dr. Baxter Bell answers these questions in his talk with YogaUOnline (see below), and he discusses the four factors you can look at to determine whether or not you may have this condition.

Learn about the multiple ways yoga might help prevent metabolic syndrome or even reverse it in its early stages. Dr. Bell also offers insight into how yoga offers unique opportunities for weight loss, blood sugar control, stress relief, and cholesterol management, and provides a formula for healthy aging.

People with metabolic syndrome risk developing type 2 diabetes in as little as 2-5 years. Metabolic syndrome dramatically increases the chance of heart attacks and strokes, and some doctors suggest it might even put you at higher risk for cancers and dementia as well. Developing an understanding of this disease and how to prevent or reverse it will help you to make the choices you need to live a longer, healthier life.
